The Faculty Collective that organizes Safe Spaces is pleased to announce a series of events for “ACADEMIC FREEDOM” day, which will take place on Wednesday April 18.
There will be a series of workshops during the day following by a lecture by Steven Salaita entitled “The Neoliberal University and the End of Academic Freedom”
Here’s the schedule of events for April 18
- “Targeting Academic Freedom” in KSC 313 between 10-1130am
Texas A&M Professor Tommy Curry, who will detail his challenges and well as put into perspective the challenges to academic freedom faculty are facing.
- “Academic Freedom in Practice” in KSC 313 between 1230-2pm
Prof. Jennifer Larson, Chapter President of AAUP-KSU, will discuss contested aspects of academic freedom in the daily lives of professors, followed by Q&A.
- “The Student experience and Academic Freedom” in KSC 316 between 1230-2pm
This workshop will feature leaders of student organizations and faculty members discussing issues of academic freedom in classrooms and how to best navigate the current climate.
- “The Neoliberal University and the Limits of Academic Freedom” in Michael Schwartz 177 between 6-8pm.
This lecture will feature Steven Salaita who will discuss the corporatization of university campuses as well as the state of academic freedom in the contemporary US.
Speaker: Steven Salaita is a former professor of English and Native American Studies, who now writes for various publications. He is the author of eight books, most recently Inter/Nationalism: Decolonizing Native America and Palestine. His current project is titled We Could Be Free: Palestine in the Revolutionary Imagination.
