Field Experience

What is Field Experience?

Field experience is an essential part of the Advanced Study Phase of the teacher education program. These hands-on learning opportunities allow students to connect theory with practice by spending time in real educational settings.

Throughout the program, students will engage in a variety of clinical or field experiences, which may include:

  • Classroom observations

  • Working with small groups

  • Leading whole-class instruction

  • Assisting in diverse educational environments

These experiences are designed to build confidence, deepen understanding of instructional strategies, and develop the professional skills needed for success in the classroom.

Field placements are carefully arranged in collaboration between the course instructor and the Vacca Office of Student Services to ensure alignment with course objectives and student needs.

📢 Important Update: Pre-Service Teacher Permit Requirement

Effective July 1, 2024, all individuals enrolled in a course that is part of an Educator Preparation Program and assigned to a PK–12 classroom for any portion of the course must obtain a valid Pre-Service Teacher Permit before entering a school setting.

This requirement applies to all students participating in:

  • Field Experience

  • Student Teaching

Why This Matters:

The permit ensures that all teacher candidates meet state requirements for working in school environments and helps maintain a safe, professional standard in PK–12 classrooms.

What You Need to Do:

If your course includes time in a school or classroom setting, you must apply for and receive your Pre-Service Teacher Permit prior to the start of your placement.

For more information on how to apply for the permit, please visit our or contact the Clinical Experience Office for assistance.
