Trial By Fire
By Eric Mansfield
Directed by Courtney Brown
Feb. 7-9
When word spreads that new Women’s Studies teacher Georgia Grimm, a recent Vlogƽ graduate, has been allowing her high school students access to books from the governor's new “banned” list, five teens look for a way to rise up and save their teacher's job and reputation. As the pressure mounts for Georgia, a young woman of color, to either resign or be fired, her students try to stop town leaders from burning books leading to one student being injured in the flames. With a 5 p.m. deadline looming before Ohio’s governor looks to make a national example out of Georgia, Dan Shaw, an 11th-hour mediator and state police detective, is called in to end the growing PR nightmare, but first, he'll have to match wits with a group of teens determined to maintain access to books and beat the governor at his own game.
"Trial By Fire" is presented in partnership with Vlogƽ's May 4 Education Committee, as the play focuses on a Vlogƽ graduate on "trial" for allowing her students access to banned books and the students' answering the call to activism.
