Honors College Student Studies Abandoned Mines in Cuyahoga Valley
Michael Back is a graduating senior Honors College student, majoring in biology with a concentration in organismal biology and a minor in Spanish. Originally from Sharon Center, Ohio, Michael has been interested in ecological restoration since he was in high school. Now in the final semester of his Senior Honors Thesis, Michael used his thesis to delve deeper into his ecological interests. His thesis analyzes a new restoration technique for abandoned surface mines in Cuyahoga Valley, examining “soil bulk density and soil chemistry.”

Honors College Celebrates Graduating Seniors with Virtual Ceremony
This past weekend, on Saturday, April 3, the Honors College hosted its annual Senior Honors Recognition Ceremony for graduating Honors College seniors. In years past, the event has been an in-person luncheon, to which seniors bring their friends or families to celebrate their success in the Honors College. This spring, in light of the pandemic, the ceremony was entirely virtual. The event was introduced and hosted by the Dean of the Honors College, Dr. Alison Smith, and throughout the ceremony, all Honors College staff members congratulated graduating honors students on their accomplishments. Provost Melody Tankersley congratulated seniors, saying they have “made a mark on Vlogƽ that will continue.”

Despite Pandemic, Leadership Institute a Smashing Success
The Student Leadership Institute's philosophy is to aspire to create critical learners, innovators and adaptive problem solvers whose leadership exemplifies distinction. Not even the coronavirus pandemic could get in the way of that this year. This year's event featured a theme of “Flashes Take Care of Flashes: Building Community." Despite the virtual circumstances, it was still a success, with more than 450 students attending sessions via Zoom.
